Adeles time out of the spotlight including divorce and weight loss as new single comes out
For the first time in six years, Adele has released a new single Easy on Me and returned to public life ahead of her highly-anticipated new album, 30.
The notoriously private soul singer recollected about her time out of the spotlight in an in-depth interview with British and American Vogue as their crossover cover star. The six-year hiatus saw the 15-time Grammy winner get married and divorced, move to LA, lose 100lbs, battle through a ‘Year of Anxiety’ and then face a global pandemic.
Adele confessed that she “lost the plot” in her Saturn return years between the age of 27 to 32 – which is when Saturn has orbited the sun and returns to the location it was in when you were born.
The superstar told American Vogue: “When that comes, it can rock your life, It shakes you up a bit: Who am I? What do I want to do? What makes me truly happy? All those things.”
Initially, it seemed as though Adele married Simon Konecki in 2016, as she referred to him as her husband during her Grammy’s speech. She later appeared to file for divorce in 2019.
Yet, as with most news about Adele, that timeline was wrong.
“The timeline the press have of my relationship, my marriage, is actually completely wrong,” Adele confessed.
“We got married when I was 30… and then I left.” She didn’t say how long the marriage lasted, just that she was “embarrassed” about it as the marriage “wasn’t very long.”
Adele frankly explained that the split was as amicable as a divorce could be.
“Neither of us did anything wrong,” Adele explained. “Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that.
"It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved. It’s really important to me.”
Since her divorce, Adele has lost over 100lbs. Despite all the theories behind her staggering weight loss and the trainers who have claimed to transform her, the main cause of her weight loss was her anxiety.
“It was because of my anxiety,” Adele began.
“Working out, I would just feel better. It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone.
“I got quite addicted to it. I work out two or three times a day.”
Split into weights, boxing and cardio sessions, the star religiously follows her extensive exercise regime and has done for the past three years at the lavish private gym, Heart & Hustle in West Hollywood.
“So I do my weights in the morning,” Adele told Vogue, “then I normally hike or I box in the afternoon, and then I go and do my cardio at night.
“I was basically unemployed when I was doing it. And I do it with trainers.”
It was that viral photo that Adele posted on her 30th birthday in a black mini dress that first showed off her slim, toned figure that began the fascination with her weight loss. It now boasts over 12 million likes on on the social media platform Instagram.
Adele credits her workouts as the “key” to getting through her year-long battle with anxiety, along with regular therapy and a good helping of baths and meditation.
“It became my time,” she reflected about the gym, “I realised that when I was working out, I didn’t have any anxiety.
“I thought, If I can make my body physically strong, and I can feel that and see that, then maybe one day I can make my emotions and my mind physically strong.”
During her interviews, Adele revealed that the new album, 30, isn’t about divorcing her husband, but in some ways “it was more me divorcing myself.”
She added: “I realised that I was the problem. Cause all the other albums are like, You did this! You did that! F*** you! Why can’t you arrive for me?
"Then I was like: Oh, s***, I’m the running theme, actually. Maybe it’s me! ”
She hoped that the album would also help her nine year old son, Angelo, when he was older understand why she filed for divorce.
The new album was originally scheduled to be released in September 2020, which Adele revealed last February when drunk after officiating her friend’s wedding.
Adele’s new album comes out 19 November.
