Kate Garraway is struggling to plan her 'bittersweet' wedding anniversary with husband Derek Draper.

The pair will celebrate 16 years of marriage next week, but planning is said to be “hard” for the 54 year old as she doesn’t want to “tempt fate” following Derek's Covid battle.

Although he returned home from hospital in April, Derek still has a long road to recovery.

He was hospitalised 18 months ago and since returning home he has been experiencing extreme fatigue, with Kate recently revealing he sleeps for 20 hours a day.

Derek, also 54, also cannot walk so needs to use a wheelchair and requires round-the-clock care.

Good Morning Britain star Kate’s best friend, TV presenter Clare Nasir, said of their upcoming anniversary: “Kate lives day to day with Derek because she doesn’t know what’s going to happen in 24 hours, let alone further along than that.

She continued to Closer magazine: “I’m sure she’s got things she’d want to do, but she doesn’t want to tempt fate. That’s why her anniversary will be so bittersweet – planning is so hard.

“She lives every day as it comes because something unexpected could happen at any moment with Derek’s condition…"

Kate and former political advisor Derek tied the knot back in 2005 in a beautiful ceremony exclusively covered by OK!.

The couple were joined by her TV colleagues including her GMB co-host Ben Shepherd and her former GMTV co-star Fiona Phillips.

There was also a surprise guest at the nuptials – former Strictly Come Dancing professional Brendan Cole.

Derek later revealed he’d been receiving dancing lessons from the trained dancer ahead of their big day!

Kate wore a stunning Caroline Castigliano wedding dress for the ceremony and London reception.

This was followed by another reception at St Mary's Club and Function Room in Chorley for Derek’s family.

Kate and Derek met in 2004 after being introduced by a mutual friend and went on to marry just a year later.

Kate had hoped the pair would renew their wedding vows in 2020 for their 15th anniversary, but sadly it wasn’t meant to be after Derek was struck down with Covid-19 in March 2020.

Together the pair are parents to two children, daughter Darcy, 15, and son Billy, 12.

Kate, Darcy and Billy were recently able to enjoy a family trip to Marbella in Spain, but Derek was sadly unable to join them.

But Clare, who was also on the trip with them, revealed that Derek was constantly in Kate's thoughts.

Clare, 51, who is Channel 5’s weather presenter, said: “She was on a hotline to Derek the whole time… that’s always the closest thing to her mind, wherever she is.

“We know there are a lot of unknowns and she’s still having to cope with that every day. However, he [Derek’s] a determined person who is doing everything he can to rehabilitate.”

Kate's documentary about Derek, titled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek, is nominated for a gong at tomorrow's National Television Awards.

The mum-of-two previously said she hopes to be able to take Derek to the ceremony at London's O2 Arena.
