Prince William's aides "planted stories" about the Duke of Cambridge's concerns for brother Prince Harry's mental health, a friend has claimed.

The Duke of Sussex's friend and biographer Omid Scobie has said it was "no coincidence" that stories about 36 year old Harry's mental health came out a day after his comments about his relationship with his brother William, 39, in 2019.

Harry told ITV royal journalist Tom Bradby that he and William were "on different paths", in a ITV special documentary which followed them on their royal tour of Africa in 2019.

Duke of Sussex Harry's wife also revealed to Tom that she was "surviving not thriving" when asked if she was OK in the doc, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.

Following the interview – according to Finding Freedom author Omid, 38, – reports emerged that William was "worried about Harry's mental health", which the writer has claimed were planted by the Duke of Cambridge's aides.

Omid's claims are set to air in a new documentary, Harry & William: What Went Wrong, on Sunday 4 July.

According to Mail Online, he tells the documentary: "I would say that it was no coincidence that it was shortly after that aired, even the next day, there were source quotes that came from a senior aide at Kensington Palace saying that William was worried about his brother’s mental health.

"That fed off such an ugly thing for Harry and it did not go unnoticed. Now whether William directed that or not, no one will ever know, but it came from his household that he is the boss of."

He adds: "Meghan came in driven and ready to work and that immediately ruffled feathers. She’s a woman well into her 30s: I think she’s proven to herself and the people she’s worked with up until that point that she knows what she’s doing.

"She was certainly not someone who was going to change herself just to please the people around her. I felt they also had to be reminded: 'You’re not the stars of the show here. There is a hierarchy and you don’t come very high in it.'"

OK! has contacted Prince William's representatives for comment.

Harry's comments about his relationship with his brother came just a few months before he and Meghan announced plans to step down from their roles as senior members of the Royal Family.

The Prince, who has returned to the US after the unveiling of Princess Diana's statue, explained they had drifted apart.

He said in the film: "We are certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him as I know he will always be there for me.

"We don’t see each other as much as we used to but I love him dearly and the majority of stuff is created out of nothing. As brothers, you have good days, you have bad days."
