Teen drama series Riverdale focuses on a group of high school student living in the titular quintessential American town. The core quartet consists of Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse), Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) have become close over the seasons as they crack some of the most complex mysteries swirling around their hometown. But fans of The CW drama series are curious to know how much of this camaraderie and friendship translates off-screen.

Are Riverdale stars Cole Sprouse and KJ Apa friends in real-life?

Sprouse and Apa have portrayed their characters since 2017 when Riverdale became a global hit thanks to its subversion of the teen genre.

In the show, Jughead and Archie have been pretty much life-long friends with the core four established from the second episode of the show.

The gruelling schedule of Riverdale means the cast is shooting for most of the year with a two-month break when the series is off-season, allowing the actors to go off and take on other projects.

This means the cast spends a lot of time together and would get to know each other very well over the years.

They also do press together which means more time with one another.

The good news for Riverdale fans is Sprouse and Apa are close friends, so much so they were quarantining together earlier this year during the coronavirus lockdown.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight earlier this year, Sprouse’s twin brother Dylan said: “Him and KJ in the very beginning of quarantine ended up staying together at KJ’s place in LA. So, they’re isolating together, which is very cute.”

He joked: “I’ve heard a lot of cute stories. I heard they’re just lifting weights and eating cheese. I think that’s what they do.

“He’s good. He’s getting healthy, he’s relaxing, and I talk to him every day.”

They are now believed to be filming on season five of Riverdale with the show tentatively returning to the set in Vancouver, Canada to shoot new episodes.

In 2019, the acting duo went to Apa’s native New Zealand where Sprouse soaked up the sights with his friend and shared snaps of the trip on Instagram.

Among the places the pair visited included Auckland, a cowboy bar, and the Hidden Valley Festival.

The pair often rib each other on social media with Sprouse sometimes poking fun at Apa on Twitter.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times earlier this year, Apa described his friend as a “legend”.

He revealed to the publication how they had both unknowingly put in an offer on the same house with Sprouse encouraging Apa to take it.

Sprouse also opened up about the friendship between Jughead and Archie in Riverdale.

He told Teen Vogue in 2017: “I think he’s one of those characters [who] is a little bit vain and considers himself to be a little better than the people he surrounds himself with.

“He’s an introvert, so he’s nervous being around large groups of people.”

The star continued: “Archie remains a fundamental tether to the characters of the comics, in which he’s sort of this guy who ends up in these situations and is totally unequipped. I hope that people catch that storyline.”

While Apa said Archie was always there trying to help his friends when each one of them were going through various personal issues with their family.

However, season five could see Archie and Jughead’s bromance dissolve after the truth comes out about the kiss the jock secretly shared with Betty.

Riverdale season 5 will air on The CW and Netflix UK on 2021
