Sarah Harding’s ex boyfriend Chad Johnson has revealed the Girls Aloud star, who sadly died after a battle with breast cancer on Sunday, had really missed her Girls Aloud bandmates.
American Chad, 34, who met Sarah on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017, also said his former love had seen the girls as “sisters” and had always wanted things to “go back to being the way it was” between them.
In a new interview, the grieving American football star opened up on his time with the late singer, and how she truly felt about Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Kimberly Walsh and Nicola Roberts.
Sarah and Chad enjoyed a whirlwind romance after sparks flew in Big Brother, but unfortunately things fizzled in the real world.
“Sarah loved to talk about her Girls Aloud girls,” Chad began. "She made it clear they were very close friends, which wasn’t surprising given how many years they had been together.
“I think Sarah really missed the girls. They were like her sisters. They were family,” the sportsman, who has also spoken about the star "wanting to be a mum" before her untimely death, told The Sun.
The footballer went on to say while Sarah had brought up some of the “squabbles” the group had had over the years, he claimed that reading between the lines he could tell she just “missed them”.
Chad explained that Sarah, who wrote her memoir Hear Me Out in the months leading up to her death, was also incredibly “proud” of her work in the band, and had often shown him clips from their beginnings on Popstars: The Rivals too.
Sarah and the rest of the girls enjoyed a seven-year run in Girls Aloud from 2002 before deciding to split up, with the group reuniting one last time for a year in 2012.
It comes as tributes have been pouring in for the late star since the news of her tragic death, with particularly emotional statements from Sarah’s former bandmates.
Cheryl, 38, shared a poignant Instagram post dedicated to her longtime bandmate, saying she was feeling “at a loss for words” that their “stunning, unique, crazy, quirky, kind and soft hearted girl has departed”.
She also told fans how much their support had helped Sarah through the difficult times, before saying farewell to her old friend.
While Nadine, 36, admitted she was “absolutely devastated” and couldn’t think of the right words to express how she felt about Sarah and what she means to her.
New mum Kimberly, 39, also shared tributes to the beautiful pop star and their years of working together, and Nicola, 35, posted: "Electric girl, you made us. You gave it everything and still with a smile. A white butterfly flew past my window this morning before I knew, it must have been you."
“Beautiful Sarah this hurts so bad,” she posted on Instagram. “To wake up and know that you are really gone is too much to bear.
“Hearing your infectious chuckle was one of my favourite things in the world. Your fire burned so bright and you loved, lived and laughed so hard,” the star continued, adding that her heart is “so broken”.
Sarah, who died at the age of 39, revealed she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2020.
The star had been off social media for a while when she explained the private battle she’d been fighting.
Sadly, Sarah’s doctor told her in December 2020 would be her last Christmas and her mum Marie shared the heartbreaking news of her daughter’s death on Sunday, September 5.
