Stuck on a deserted island in the movie “Cast Away,” Chuck Noland fashions a friend out of a volleyball named Wilson. Stuck in an isolating depression post-breakup, Mark McDevitt found a friend named Nate.

On this week’s Modern Love podcast, the actor William Jackson Harper reads Mr. McDevitt’s essay about breakup buddies, “Misery Loves Fried Chicken, Too.”

Mr. Harper plays Chidi Anagonye in the TV series “The Good Place.” He also stars in the movie “Midsommar,” which comes out in July. Mr. McDevitt is a freelance writer and screenwriter. Stay tuned after the reading to hear more from him, Mr. Harper and the Modern Love editor Daniel Jones.
