CAA Signs ‘Mayday’ Director Karen Cinorre (EXCLUSIVE)

CAA has signed filmmaker Karen Cinorre, who made her debut with the action fantasy film “May.”

The film, which Cinorre also wrote and produced, was recently acquired by Magnolia Pictures. The indie studio recently announced that it plans to release “Mayday” this fall.

“Mayday” premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it earned positive notices. It was nominated for the Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The film stars Grace Van Patten, Mia Goth, Havana Rose Liu, Soko, Théodore Pellerin, and Juliette Lewis. In “Mayday,” Ana (Van Patten) finds herself transported to a dreamlike and dangerous coastline. Once there, she joins a female army engaged in a never-ending war where the women lure men to their deaths with radio signals, like 20th century sirens. Though Ana finds strength in this exhilarating world, she comes to realize she is not the killer they want her to be.

In a positive review, Variety critic Peter Debruge wrote that “Karen Cinorre is a natural world-builder, creating an evocative parallel world.” He went on to praise the filmmaker’s “strong visual instincts.”

“It’s a thrill to see young filmmakers raging against the status quo, which clearly extends to the original way they launch their attacks, and ‘Mayday’ marks a director to watch,” Debruge wrote.

Cinorre’s short films have shown internationally at such venues as the New York Film Festival and Opera Centrum Amsterdam.

Cinorre is currently in production on a documentary titled “The Last People.” She was not previously represented.
