Registered nurse Maggie Rawlins, who put her modeling career on pause to pitch in amid the COVID-19 pandemic, is making her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut in the iconic magazine’s 2021 issue.

Rawlins was scouted while working as a nurse in Charleston, and decided to pursue a second career in fashion; she later landed shoots with Love Magazine and Elle Croatia as well as ad work, according to her bio on the SI Swim website.

But when the coronavirus crisis began, she returned to her healthcare roots, working at NYC hospitals as well as volunteering as a One World Health ambassador to help bring affordable medical care to underserved communities.

“I feel like everyone has a role and responsibility to play during the pandemic,” Rawlins told People. “Since I have an active nursing license, I felt like [going back to nursing] was the right thing to do. Additionally, it was in New York City … That city has been so good to me, and I wanted to give back.”

For her shoot, the multifaceted model posed in front of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, wearing a coral cutout one-piece swimsuit from Sage Swim.

“Not only is she an incredibly beautiful model, she is also living proof that it’s never too late to give back to your community,” Sports Illustrated Swimsuit editor MJ Day said in a press release.

“She returned to her career in nursing when COVID-19 hit, volunteering to work at several hospitals in Queens. As a former pediatric oncology nurse and a COVID frontline warrior, her dedication, commitment and passion towards helping others are the types of traits we love to celebrate and highlight.”

The 2021 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue hits newsstands in July.
