LAYER Designs Hi-Tech COVID-19-Conscious Movie Theater Seats

London-based agency Layer has conceptualized movie theater seats that aim to limit the spread of COVID-19. The designs suggest how cinema experiences could change during the current pandemic-era as theaters across the United States begin to reopen.

The seats are made with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral fabrics that are intricately woven with copper oxide threads. Constructed without any crevices, to prevent dirt and other unsanitary buildups, the chairs have been made for easy cleaning. Protective semi-translucent screens are placed at the headrests to create a barrier between neighboring audiences. They also come with LED displays that show seat numbers to help avoid confusion. Finally, virus-killing UV lights are installed behind each seat as well as in built-in cubbies for extra sterilization.
