My son’s mental health is getting worse with every passing day

DEAR DEIDRE: MY son’s mental health is getting worse with every passing day. He is very angry with the world and feels nobody understands him.

He’s 25 and came back home to live with us a year ago. In that time he has gone downhill. He keeps talking about not wanting to live. He rarely showers and his room is shocking.

If I ever suggest he gets help, he becomes angry. My emotions are on a rollercoaster because of his moods.

I’m his mum and 48 years old. How do I survive until he gets to the point where we have to section him?

I really need help myself, as he won’t accept any. I need someone to tell me I’m doing things correctly.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your son does sound very depressed.

Pick a calm moment and tell him he has to help you by helping himself – and to begin with, insist that he goes to see his GP.

Don’t give up on your son. If he accepts help, you will benefit too.

Urge him to contact Calm, the Campaign Against Living Miserably, which supports men who are down (, 0800 585858).

It would help you to offload on someone, so consider counselling.

My support pack How Counselling Can Help explains more.
