Welsh Grand National ABANDONED at Chepstow with course forced to reschedule for January following Storm Bella

TODAY'S Coral Welsh Grand National has been abandoned.

Chepstow officials were forced to cancel their flagship meeting after heavy rainfall left the track waterlogged – but it has been rescheduled for January 9.

The track has had little luck in recent years on the weather front, with this the fifth abandonment since 2010.

Earlier in the week there had been optimism that the prestigious card, which also features the Grade 1 Finale Juvenile Hurdle, would go ahead.

But Storm Bella brought with it 27mm of overnight rain, bringing the total rainfall the track has received this week to an incredible 127mm.

Following a 7.45am inspection, clerk of the course Libby O'Flaherty called the meeting off.

She said: "We've had another 27mm overnight and this morning, up to 7am when I was walking the track.

"It's so annoying as there's just one area of false ground down the back straight and I was trying to find a way around it but there just isn't one."

She added: "We hope to reschedule the meeting for January 9 and hopefully the weather will be kinder to us then."

Limerick's card on Sunday was also called off due to water logging while the meeting there on Monday must pass an 8am precautionary inspection following 18mm of overnight rain on already heavy ground.

Conditions have eased at Kempton Park for Sunday's big-race card following 8mm of overnight rain.

It is now Soft, Good to Soft in places, with Altior and Shishkin the stars of the show.

Wetherby survived a morning inspection, but the going is now Heavy after 18mm of rain overnight and the last three fences in the back straight will be bypassed.
