Angela Black is finally making its way to television screens almost a year after it was commissioned, exploring what happens behind closed doors in cases of domestic abuse. Harry and Jack Williams, who created Liar, have penned the six-part drama and they have recruited one of their biggest stars to take the leading role. Here is everything you need to know about who is in the cast of the ITV thriller.
Who is in the cast of Angela Black?
Joanne Froggatt – Angela Myers
Best known to audiences as Downton Abbey’s Anna Bates and for playing the leading role in Liar, Joanne has once again collaborated with the Williams brothers.
The actress will be taking on the titular role of Angela, who leads the life of a typical mother of two but she is harbouring a dark secret from the world.
Behind closed doors, she is abused and controlled by her husband and as she tries to keep up appearances, she realises someone has taken an interest in her.
As Angela begins to question the life she has found herself a part of, viewers will be left on the edge of their seats with all the twists and turns.
Joanne said of her character: “Angela is a complex and intriguing character and I hope audiences will be immediately drawn into her gripping, and sometimes heart-breaking journey, just as I was.”
Michiel Huisman – Oliver Myers
Oliver is the husband of Angela, who uses his manipulative streak to control his wife’s life and he loses his temper with her often.
However, to the outside world, he is the perfect partner and father to the couple’s two children, with his friends not realising the pretence he is putting up.
Playing the role is Dutch actor Michiel, who is also a singer-songwriter and has featured in a multitude of British and Dutch works.
Some of his most well-known performances include playing Ellis Jones in the fantasy film, The Age of Adaline.
Angela is a complex and intriguing character
Michiel’s television work includes playing Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones and Steven Crain in The Haunting of Hill House.
Discussing his part in the show, the Dutch actor said: “I’m proud to be part of such a thrilling and clever story with so many twists and turns.
“I can’t wait to take on the role of Olivier and work alongside the incredibly talented Joanne and Samuel,” he added.
It will emerge the character hasn’t told his wife everything about his life, which lines up the introduction of another character.
Ed Harrison – Sam Adewunmi
This is one of Sam’s biggest roles to date and he will play private investigator Ed Harrison in the six-part drama.
At first, he will appear to be following Angela for an unknown reason but when they speak, his motive becomes clear.
He will inform Oliver’s wife of all her abuser’s darkest secrets, leaving her to consider whether she can escape her life under his control.
However, she will also have to think about whether she can completely trust Ed as he is a stranger to her at first.
Discussing being a part of the show, Sam said: “I always find myself drawn to characters like Ed when watching/reading dramas and it’s no different with Angela Black.
“That coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Craig Viveiros (again) as well as Harry and Jack Williams on a compelling story like Angela Black is very exciting.
“And fortuitous when considering the impact 2020 has had on all industries including film and TV. I feel blessed.”
Viewers might recognise Sam from his roles in shows such as Doctor Who, The Watch, Prime Suspect 1973 and Dixi.
He also played the role of the Chicken Shack manager in the BBC series The Missing written by Harry and Jack Williams.
