Coronation Street viewers were devastated in November when the legendary Roy Cropper (David Neilson) left Weatherfield. The soap stalwart left behind his beloved cafe Roy’s Rolls as he climbed into the back of a taxi and set off to start a new life in South America. The emotional exit left Roy’s niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) heartbroken. According to official ITV soap spoilers, things are soon set to go from bad to worse for Nina. The youngster will struggle with her mental health in the coming weeks. Could Roy end up returning in the new year to help his niece get past her anxiety?
In upcoming scenes on Coronation Street, Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) gives Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) her first driving lesson.
However, things soon go awry as Faye brakes sharply and stalls the car in front of Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) and Nina.
While Asha finds the incident amusing, an anxious Nina is badly shaken-up.
Later on in the week, Nina struggles to cope with her anxiety as she tries in vain to get hold of Asha.
Carla Connor (Alison King) notices Nina’s uneasiness, realising the youngster’s problems run much deeper than she’s letting on.
Chatting to Carla about her struggles, Nina admits to suffering from anxiety over Asha’s safety.
Later on, Asha invites Nina to join her family for Christmas Day, but she declines leaving Asha hurt.
Nina instead spends the day alone in the cafe, struggling with her anxiety.
However, she soon gets a very special Christmas present from a concerned Carla.
Could this be a special message from Roy?
Carla’s special Christmas gift encourages Nina to open up and she admits she’s struggling.
Will this encounter push Nina to get some help for her mental health battle?
After Christmas, Nina explains to Asha how she’s suffering from anxiety and lives in constant fear that something bad will happen to the people she loves.
Asha suggests they sync their phones so she’ll always know where she is.
Having spent the night at Asha’s, Nina feels refreshed and gives her girlfriend a heartfelt Christmas present, a framed drawing of the two of them.
Asha is overcome by the thoughtful gift and her father Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) is pleased to see her happy again.
However, when Asha calls in the cafe later on, she finds Nina suffering from another anxiety attack and does her best to reassure her.
If Nina continues to struggle with her mental health, it could start to have a serious impact on her life.
As her concerns for Nina grow, will Carla convince Roy to return to Weatherfield to help his niece?
David Neilson, who plays Roy on the soap, recently addressed his future on Coronation Street in an interview.
Not wanting to give too much away, the actor teased: “There are two exits in this for me: one for the character and one for David. Hopefully they won’t coincide – maybe they will.
“I know Roy leaving will get a reaction. It’s a big part of your life and a big part of that popular culture.
“He will be remembered for a long while,” David told Inside Soap.
It’s currently unclear whether Roy will return to Coronation Street, but with his niece struggling to cope on her own, he could make a comeback in the new year.
Coronation Street continues Monday at 7:30pm on ITV.
