Series 11 of Death In Paradise kicked off on Friday on BBC One, with eager fans hoping to find out if Florence (played by Joséphine Jobert) and Neville Parker (Ralf Litte) would end their will-they-won’t-they status and form a romantic relationship. With growing chemistry between the pair, Neville has made several attempts to admit his feelings to his friend and colleague. After a few communication mishaps though, viewers were expecting the first episode to see the two deciding once and for all to start dating. Their hopes were dashed though after Florence told Neville she’d prefer to stay friends.
The recent Christmas special episode saw Florence video call Neville from France, and he asked her out on a date.
But Neville’s screen froze and the pair couldn’t continue chatting.
At the end of the festive episode, Florence admitted to Catherine (Elizabeth Bourgine) that she had heard everything but couldn’t decide what to do.
Not long into the opening instalment of the new series, Florence addressed the incident.
Catherine asked her: “Has there been any more mention of… you know what?”
“No, not since the call at Christmas,” Florence replied.
“He’s said nothing. He still doesn’t know I heard him.”
“And what about you?” Catherine inquired. “How do you feel about him?”
“He’s such a good friend that I think that’s how I’d like to keep things between us,” she admitted.
Neville drunkenly admitted his feelings for her later in the episode, though.
“Ever since I got here you’ve been so kind to me, Florence,” Neville muttered as he drifted off to sleep.
He added: “So kind – I really care about you so much, you’re so lovely.”
Chatting about the situation the next day, Neville hid his heartbreak when Florence asked to remain friends.
“I was thrown by what you said,” she stated. “It made me raise how much I care about you and how important you are to me – as a friend.”
She added: “I love you as a friend as someone I want to always be in my life.”
Disappointed fans quickly took to Twitter to express their sadness.
Evie wrote: “No I’m actually going to cry you can’t tell me Florence doesn’t have feelings for Neville #deathinparadise.”
Abi added: “THAT WAS SUCH AN ADORABLE SCENE BETWEEN NEVILLE AND FLORENCE I WANT TO CRY #DeathInParadise @deathinparadise.”
Marisa penned: “Nooooo Florence #DeathInParadise.”
“So after spending the last season of #DeathInParadise of Florence and Neville dancing around the issue, it’s now been friend-zoned – I can’t even,” Jodie Portugal fumed. (sic)
Death In Paradise continues on Friday at 9pm on BBC One.
