Escape to the Chateau’s Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree were joined by their children Arthur and Dorothy for this month’s ‘An Evening With’ which The Salon members get first access to, amongst other things. The instalment was a little different as the couple were not inside The Chateau, but in The Walled Garden – their children’s favourite place. And Dick revealed his wife had been converted into a gardener and joked about getting rid of her iconic fashion accessories – one of which is a suspender belt.
Dick and Angel started off in a forklift above The Walled Garden and Dick introduced fans: “Welcome to The Chateau…look at that, not too shoddy.
“Right, that’s North, around by The Chateau, beautiful…Mademoiselle Daisy, Jenny and Steve’s place, the domes, swinging around. Have you taken a photograph yet?
“It’s a beautiful evening, the children are with grandma and grandad at the minute.
“The Chateau has got sunshine on it and Angela and I thought we’d start this a little differently,” he said turning the camera on Angel.
She replied: “Hello. One hand at a time, I’m holding on!”
“You are holding on! Because we have come to talk about the walled garden and what better way to do that then coming up here and starting by looking down!” Dick explained.
“We’re coming down to look into the walled garden, down we come. And when we get to the bottom, Petale is there, waiting for us.”
The camera was then handed to someone else and Dick and Angel were seen side by side.
The engineer commented: “Angela is, actually now, a closet gardener.
“You have been working on a Sunday, when we have some time with the kids on a Sunday we will be out here and you will potter in the garden. Come out, come out! We’re listening to you.”
“I have really enjoyed pottering in the garden, I do things without being told,” Angel replied.
“My job here is done,” Dick said. “You take a girl from the East End of London, you take her, take off her stilettos and her high heels, get rid of her suspender belt and you make her wear books and work in the garden. How stupid am I? But, you do know your way around the garden.”
“I do and I completely thank you, because nature, before we came out here, was, and I loved it, but a walk around Victoria park or along a canal,” Angel continued.
“But when we were in London, that was nature,” Dick remarked and his wife added: “And it was gorgeous. We had a roof garden with a shed. But look, this is your area sweetheart.”
“But, actually what’s important is this whole thing have changed since we’ve been here,” Dick mentioned.
He was then seen entering a greenhouse and telling fans what they were growing: “We’ve even got some tomatoes – it’s May but the tomatoes are not looking too terrible considering. We’ve got a lot of self-seeded ones from last year.
“And over here, we’ve got some cucumber, I’m really quite pleased with my cucumber, last year we seemed to have short fat ones but this year I’ve got a long cucumber plant. With a bit of luck that will start growing up there and we will have more and more cucumbers.”
Arthur then ran in to show him a pea pod which they split in half and shared.

After picking a few more, Dorothy also got to try the small peas which they had grown.
Dick revealed to his children: “Listen to this, Granny made the all Ireland Champion pea pod wine… you can use the pods because after you’ve had the pea, you can make wine.”
Angel interrupted: “I didn’t know that story, that’s a lovely story.”
“Women’s Institute pea pod wine champion thank you! That’s my mummy,” Dick proudly said.
