Lily James confesses she 'makes mistakes all the time' after kissing married co-star Dominic West

ACTRESS Lily James has confessed to making mistakes “all the time” — in a video released 48 hours after she was seen kissing married co-star Dominic West.

Pictures in The Sun of the pair cuddling in Rome have caused a sensation.

Lily, 31, unwittingly added fuel to the fire in a film for posh mag Harper’s Bazaar in which she said she admired a female character who cheated on her husband.

She recorded the chat in Somerset over Zoom weeks ago while shooting BBC drama The Pursuit of Love alongside West, 50.

And she says in it: “I think I make mistakes all the time and I feel that’s what life’s about and I would never want to run away from a situation or be too scared to act…

“I’m still figuring it out but I do think I can grow and develop a thicker skin. All that matters is those who love you.”

In the newly unearthed interview, the Downton Abbey star also discusses her latest lead role in the new movie adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.

Lily added: “The character Rebecca, she went against all norms as a woman. [She] disobeyed her husband and had affairs, was basically just brilliant and that was only in the 1930s.

“People are afraid of women when they’re unleashed and women are warriors and that’s intimidating.

“I feel I’ve rebelled in that way. I was always a rebellious teenager and I think it’s important to rebel in that way.

“I think criticism can be good if it’s constructive but I feel like if it’s attacking you or a vendetta that’s really difficult but I’m still learning.

Smirking West posed for photos with wife Catherine Fitzgerald, 49, outside their country mansion on Tuesday as the couple insisted their marriage was as strong as ever.

Meanwhile, Lily has been left on the receiving end of a torrent of social media abuse painting her as the “other woman”.

West, 19 years her senior and married with four children — plus one from a previous relationship — was the one seen patting her bottom in the pictures. But Lily, who is resolutely single, has been pilloried.

Friends say she is the one who has been devastated by the vitriol coming her way. And they point out she has been the main victim of appalling trolling.

While at first glance it seems unlikely, pals also insist the photos of the pair are deceptive.

One said: “Lily is absolutely devastated by how this whole situation has played out. No one but she and Dominic, and one of their mutual agents who was with them for much of the day, really knows what the score is. Yet, she is being portrayed as this home-wrecking man-eater.

“Photos can be deceptive — and Lily and Dominic both insist that’s the case here. Dominic and his wife have done their very public kissing and making-up but Lily has no one fighting her corner. Instead, she’s getting terribly trolled on social media and she is very, very hurt by all the abuse.”

Interviews scheduled for this week to promote the film have been drastically overhauled since the photos came to light.

Lily has continued to fulfil her media duties, although the team looking after the film have been flexing their collective muscle to ensure all personal questions are off-limits.

A source said: “Lily’s a true professional so has approached everything with her usual demeanour but obviously there is a rather large elephant in the room.

“Every interview scheduled for this week has been closely looked at to assess the risk and companies were warned about being blacklisted from future opportunities if they asked anything about Dominic or allude to the pictures. It would be a total disaster if anyone went rogue and the team have pulled out all the stops to make sure every interview is perfectly executed with minimal room with manoeuvre.”

Quite what will happen when West and Lily have to promote their BBC adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s novel remains to be seen.

The photos taken in Rome this week showed them canoodling over a boozy lunch, with Dominic leaning in at one point to seemingly kiss her neck.

West, who played philandering Noah Solloway in hit drama The Affair, flew home from Italy for crisis talks with his wife.

He brazenly emerged the following day to release a statement alongside the Irish socialite.

The pair awkwardly kissed as she clutched a piece of paper bearing the hand-written words: “Our marriage is strong, and we are very much together.” They then kissed for the cameras.

Lily, who dated ex-Doctor Who Matt Smith, 37, for five years, is said to have previously developed an “exceptionally close bond” to another older actor,

Ben Chaplin, 51, on the set of the 2015 Disney remake of Cinderella. The film, which helped propel her to global fame, featured Ben as her dad, with Cate Blanchett as the Stepmother.

Lily got her big break as Lady Rose MacClare in Downton. She is now a permanent fixture in London’s new Primrose Hill set.

They replaced the previous gang of 1990s hell-raisers including Jude Law, Sadie Frost and Kate Moss.
