Fans are curious to know who killed Pablo Escobar in Narcos, and has everything you need to know.

Who killed Pablo Escobar in Narcos?

Escobar dominated the drug trafficking industry throughout the first season of Narcos, but saw his demise at the end of the second season.

The season finale was an accurate representation of how the real Escobar died in December 1993.

The drug lord was gunned down on a rooftop in Medellin, Colombia, after a shootout with members of the Search Bloc police force.

Escobar had been on the run for more than a year when he managed to escape from the prison he constructed for himself in June 1992.

Police managed to trace him through a call he made to his son Juan Pablo.

  • Narcos: Why did Steve Murphy star Boyd Holbrook really leave Narcos?

Narcos depicted how Escobar managed to break out of the luxury prison, known as La Catedral.

The crews behind the series spoke to real-life DEA agents Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) about Escobar’s death scene.

They hoped to shoot the death scene on the same rooftop Escobar died, but they were unable to use the exact location.

They staged the death scene in the same way, with Escobar firing a few rounds before being taken down.

One police officer in particular then shot Escobar in the head from close range, saying “long live Colombia”.

The police officers then gathered around Escobar’s dead body for a trophy photo, and this actually happened when the real Escobar died.

Pascal spoke to CBS This Morning about how accurate the death scene was. He said: “How he dies, who kills him, is a mystery.

“You’ll get so many different answers in terms of who fired the shot. Or shots. We have our interpretation… Narcos doesn’t believe [he took his own life]. The DEA doesn’t believe that as well.”

The Hollywood Reporter said: “While the Search Bloc is credited with killing the drug lord, the identity of the person who fired the final shot to Escobar’s head has never been confirmed.”

He was shot in the leg and torso and died from the fatal shot in his ear. Escobar’s family said the drug kingpin had said he would shoot himself if he ever found himself surrounded.

The real Steve Murphy is one of the only people who knows who actually shot Escobar, as he was there at the time.

Speaking about taking the trophy photo he said: “The reason I was smiling is because we knew, effective that moment, that every citizen in Colombia was safer, simply because one man died.”

Pena also spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about the portrayal of Escobar’s death, and he said: “We told them how it actually happened.

“There’s some artistic license, but the timeline is accurate. The search is going to be very, very complex.

“It’s going to be exciting, and there’s going to be stuff out there that’s never been told.”

  • Narcos Mexico: Who was Sergio Espino Verdin? What happened to him?

According to Business Insider Colonel Hugo Martinez, the Search Bloc leader, heard one of his men over the radio.

They said: “The Search Bloc leader who had pursued Escobar for three bloody years but was not on the scene, heard one of his men shouting into the radio.

“‘Viva Colombia!’ the soldier said, ‘We have just killed Pablo Escobar!'”

Other rumours suggest it was a new group called Los Pepes who killed Escobar, but this idea has never been proven.
