After his jaw-dropping return in season four, Queen of the South favourite James Valdez (played by Peter Gadiot) is looking to make amends in the final chapter of the series. Ahead of season five’s premiere on the USA Network, a new promo video has teased his first conversation with Kelly-Anne Van Awken (Molly Burnett).
Series regulars Peter Gadiot and Molly Burnett have given fans a taste of what’s to come in the fifth and final season of Queen of the South.
Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) made her mark in New Orleans last season, but the past is set to catch up with her in the show’s explosive last outing.
While his absence was felt across the fanbase during most of season four, Teresa’s former partner James Valdez finally returned in the last moments of 2019’s gripping finale.
Now, a brand new clip from season five has previewed James’ unsteady relationship with Teresa’s most unreliable ally, Kelly Anne Van Awken.
Kelly Anne threatened Teresa’s operation with her cocaine addiction back in season three, and was ordered to be killed by James when she was revealed to be a mole.
However, viewers were shocked to discover she had survived in season four, and was eventually able to clean up her act to win back Teresa’s affections.
Up to this point, fans were still unsure why James decided to go against Teresa’s orders and spare Kelly Anne’s life.
Before the new season gets underway next week, some new footage has finally shed some light on James’s unexpected act of mercy.
In the latest clip from season five, Kelly Anne confronts James as he recovers from the wounds he sustained at the end of the last episode.
She admits she’s grateful that her life was spared, but is still uncertain about James’s motives for doing so.
In response, James explains: “I know you didn’t mean to betray her. You were scared and high and not thinking straight.”
Down in the comments, one Twitter user replied: “I’m so glad to see this conversation.”

“Also glad to see her making boss moves working with Teresa again this season.”
Throughout the series, Kelly Anne has been manipulated by her husband and Teresa’s rival, Cole Van Awken (Brett Cullen), who had close ties with Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón).
Having freed herself from his tight grip in Queen of the South season two, Kelly Anne still struggled with addiction but has finally won over Teresa’s trust.
Once she had confided in James, she then assures him of her sobriety and thanks him for giving her a second chance.
Even so, the clip ends with Kelly Anne confessing it took a lot to win back Teresa’s trust, and appears to be recalling some painful memories.
Teresa and Kelly Anne may be on good terms now, but the former mole could very well be on thin ice heading into season five.
However, returning star Molly Burnett was promoted to series regular ahead of the upcoming premiere, so fans could expect her character to remain by Teresa’s side until the final credits roll.
Queen of the South season 5 premieres Wednesday, April 7 on the USA Network.
