Richard Bacon has been stepping in to host Good Morning Britain with Susanna Reid on several occasions in recent weeks but the presenter confirmed on Wednesday it was his final show. Susanna has been joined by a roster of co-presenters ever since Piers Morgan dramatically quit last year.

Richard’s announcement came as he and Susanna spoke to entertainment editor Richard Arnold.

The GMB host hit back at Susanna when she spoke about replacing him twice.

She said: “I’m not firing you at all I’m more than happy for you to be here as often as you’d like.

“But you told me that today is your last day.”

“Susanna, it is my last day,” Richard confirmed.

“So I was suggesting if today is your last day does Sir David [Attenborough] want to come in,” Susanna explained.

The entertainment editor joked: “I’d love to stick around Richard but muscle strength starts at 7.30 and I’ve got to get into my lycra.”

“I’m happy to confirm that that is an upgrade if you replace Richard Bacon with David Attenborough that’s not a sideways move,” the GMB host said.

“I’m going to shimmy out of here,” the entertainment editor quipped before leaving the studio.

Disappointed with Richard’s announcement, GMB fans called on Richard to return to the show.

David Allan tweeted: “@GMB @susannareid100 Please please keep Richard Bacon.”

Suzanne Weil added: “Can Richard Bacon be a permanent fixture on GMB please????!!! A breath of fresh air @GMB @richardpbacon.”

“@GMB good morning. Can we please keep Richard Bacon on GMB,” Jackie Edwards wrote.

Last month, Richard shared his disappointment as it was confirmed GMB would be axed over the Christmas period.

The morning news programme was scheduled to air between Christmas and New Year.

However, after presenter Sean Fletcher tested positive for Covid-19, ITV took the decision to pause transmission.

Taking to Twitter, Richard wrote: “So I guess that means I won’t be presenting Good Morning Britain next week (as planned).”

“Shame but makes complete and total sense.

“Hosting this week [though] – unless I get Covid between now and Wednesday – although at this rate we’ll all have it by then.”

Good Morning Britain airs on ITV on weekdays at 6am.
