Chaser Mark Labbett, also known as The Beast, mocked host Bradley Walsh after the latter was surprised by one of the questions on The Chase. Quick to step in with his knowledge, Mark labelled Bradley “ignorant” for being unsure, but went on to answer incorrectly on the ITV show.
Bradley, 61, asked contestant Olivia: “Who was the first president to visit all 50 states while in office?”
The options included Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
“That’s mad,” the presenter commented, baffled that none had done it before.
Olivia selected an answer and Bradley commented: “You’ve put… okay, Clinton.”
He added: “I’ve got to say though, even back in the day, for Nixon, that’d have been far too late for a president to visit all 50 states -why hadn’t anyone visited it before while they were in office?”
“Well for starters,” Mark cut in. “There weren’t 50 states until 1959…”
“Oh,” Bradley replied. Mark went on: “So Eisenhower would have been the first president who could have visited all 50.”
“Alright, settle down,” Bradley remarked to the 55-year-old Chaser.
The Beast quipped: “I just want to correct your ignorance, the problem is I have to do it so often.”
Ignoring the comment, Bradley revealed: “The correct answer is Nixon.
“The Chaser’s put… Obama.” Mark looked surprised as he shrugged his shoulders.
“I think you’ll find it was Richard Nixon anyway!” Bradley jibed back.
“I knew that,” he continued. “I hate to correct your ignorance but I have to do it so often.”
“Terrible!” Olivia commented, as Bradley gave her a high five and said: “Boom!”
“Touché,” Mark replied. The Chaser redeemed himself when he later guessed at a tough question.
They were asked: “In baseball, which of these terms is used when a pitch stops all opposing players reaching a base?”
Because Mark also takes part in the US version of the show, he’d be the one to know the answer.
He correctly went with “Perfect game”, but admitted to Olivia it was a tough question for UK residents.
Mark, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha, Jenny Ryan, and Darragh Ennis make up The Chasers.
Each episode, one is tasked with beating a team of players before they can answer enough correct questions to take home the prize money they’ve built up.
The Chase airs weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
