The New 'Spencer' Trailer Unveils More of Kristen Stewart's Princess Diana Performance
The full Spencer movie trailer dropped, and it’s leaving viewers speechless. The Venice Film Festival praised Kristen Stewart‘s Princess Diana portrayal. However, a few critics have already criticized it. Some don’t believe she can thoroughly play the late Princess of Wales.
Nevertheless, the new trailer unveils more pieces of Stewart’s emotional performance. For speculative viewers, the new Spencer trailer could change the critiques.
The new ‘Spencer’ movie trailer reveals more scenes
Fans thought the first peek at the Princess Diana movie was effective. But that was nothing compared to the new trailer. The preview dives into multiple scenes. It begins with several voices saying Stewart’s Princess Diana is “late” to something. Then, viewers see Stewart driving.
The camera gives a bird’s eye view of the royal palace. And when the Princess of Wales drives up, she is greeted as “Your Highness.” After she hugs her children, Stewart’s face says it all—she can’t battle her frustration anymore.
Later, Stewart’s Princess Diana reassures herself, “Three days. That’s it.”
Throughout the trailer, we watch surrounding faces instruct Stewart on how to behave. One tells her to “stand very still and smile a lot;” Another warns her that she has to “change.” Even the Prince Charles character outlines the expectations:
“You have to be able to do things you hate…There has to be two of you. It’s the real one and the one they take pictures of.”
Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana could surprise the critics
There are quite a few critical viewers who think Stewart was the wrong casting choice. The Twilight alum has faced criticism since the actor skyrocketed to fame as Bella Swan. So she isn’t a stranger to backlash. However, critics could change their minds after watching the new Spencer trailer.
One chilling image is when Stewart’s Princess Diana cries—bundled up in a winter coat, the Princess of Wales sobs alone in the darkness. Not only that, but she also breaks down as she argues with her husband.
Besides that, fans recall the first image ever released of Stewart’s Princess Diana: She wears a black netted hat and shies away from the paparazzi. But the new trailer uncovers a new notion—is the character holding back tears in this scene? If viewers watch closely, Stewart breathes heavily as if she is hyperventilating.
The Seberg actor takes a subtle approach in her roles, particularly as Princess Diana. And this is what grips her audience. But when she yanks her pearl necklace off in the trailer, she alters the narrative. Her Diana doesn’t want to live in silence—especially when she asks, “Will they kill me, do you think?”
How is ‘Spencer’ any different from other Princess Diana projects?
Netflix’s The Crown uncovers a dark, realistic rendition of Princess Diana’s experiences. The series won multiple Emmy Awards in 2021, including the Outstanding Drama Series award. However, the Princess of Wales doesn’t appear in every season. Only Season 4 commences her story.
Aside from the show, there have been countless Princess Diana narratives. But Spencer won’t align with those. It will rather focus on a specific event. The story takes place over three days during a royal family outing.
From the looks of it, a lot happens over these few days in Spencer.
In an interview with Deadline, Stewart emphasized Princess Diana’s personality. The Spencer movie will concentrate on this aspect, not her death.
“I look at pictures of her or just a fleeting little video clip of her and I feel like the ground shakes and you don’t know what’s going to happen. The idea of somebody being so desperate for connection and somebody who is able to make other people feel so good and feeling so bad on the inside and being so generous with her energy — I just think we haven’t had that many of those people throughout history. She really sticks out as a sparkly house on fire.”
