Why was Kim Tate in prison in Emmerdale?

Actress Claire King confirmed that her character Kim Tate would be making a long-awaited, full-time return to Emmerdale earlier this month.

The second wife of Frank Tate (Norman Bowler), the character of Kim was first introduced to the soap back in 1989. While she originally left in January 1999, Kim returned to Emmerdale for a short stint in the soap in October 2018 before she made a full-time return in March 2019.

Kim re-entered the soap on March 14 2019 when Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) picked her up from prison, but why was the character in prison and how long had she been there before being released?

Why was Kim Tate in prison in Emmerdale?

Kim may have only recently been released from prison, but it’s not the first time she’s done time behind bars and been allowed out.

Kim was first sent to prison in 2013 for a series of offences including robbery, a hit and run and attacking Frank Tate’s son Chris with a paperweight when he confronted her about his father’s death.

Although Kim made a dramatic escape in a helicopter with her son James at the time, she was sentenced by a court in her absence and by 2013 it was known that she had been sent to prison and James had been sent to boarding school.

Kim and Graham kept in touch while she was in prison and after serving most of her six year sentence she was released in October 2018.

Unfortunately for Kim, her time on the outside didn’t last long (just long enough for Faith Dingle to nearly kill her by pushing her off a balcony) and she was sent back to prison not long after her release because she was caught speeding in an uninsured sports car.

The Home Farm owner only had to serve the remainder of her previous sentence however, which meant she was only locked up the second time for six months.

Since being released again from prison in March 2019, Kim has been wreaking havoc in Emmerdale, working to destroy the Sharmas and meddling in her son, Jamie’s (Alexander Lincoln), life.

Things are about to turn on their head for Kim however, as her ever reliable Graham has been having a relationship with none other than Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) and with Jamie discovering the truth, it could only be a matter of time before Kim finds out what’s been happening.

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
