Eastbound Interstate 70 closed due to falling rocks as snow hits mountains

Eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 closed Sunday afternoon near the Eisenhower Tunnel after rocks fell in the road, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The department closed the lanes about 2:30 p.m. and said travelers should expect delays. There is no expected time for reopening.

The closure came as snow fell on Colorado’s central mountains. The National Weather Service warned travelers to stay away from I-70 if possible. The weather service also issued a high wind warning for several northern Colorado communities, including Greeley and Fort Collins, where winds could gust up to 65 mph.
