Enormous sinkhole threatens to swallow family home as it’s widening every day
A giant sinkhole brimming with water looks set to swallow up a family home.
Jaw-dropping photos of the natural disaster from above show just how close it is to turning a rural property into rubble.
The Sanchez family who live in Santa Maria Zacatepec in the state of Puebla, Mexico, fear everything they own will be destroyed by the sinkhole within days.
Scientists are yet to determine what has caused the devastating crater which first developed on Saturday and has since expanded by dozens of metres daily, news.com.au reports.
The family who are helpless to watch the hole edge closer towards their house, said they heard a loud crash on Saturday which they initially believed to be a lightning strike.
Looking outside however, it became apparent that the ground had collapsed and within 24 hours grew to 30 metres wide by Sunday.
A day later that width had doubled and on Tuesday it had spread to around 80 metres, the authorities said.
Heriberto Sanchez, who left his home in the southeastern Mexican state of Veracruz, for the plot in Puebla with his family, said: "We have nothing.
"We’re not from here. We have no relatives. We’re alone."
Suggestions of a geological fault or variations in the soil’s water content have been debated by scientists and local authorities as the potential causes for the hole.
Large chunks of earth have continued to break away from the rim and topple into the pit, leading to the authorities cordoning off the surrounding land out of safety fears.
A video clip circulating on posted on social media shows two men recklessly wandering up to the massive sinkhole, only for it to suddenly expand before their eyes which saw the pair making a desperate dash for firm ground.
"It will grow until nature decides, when the water stops exerting pressure," Puebla state governor Miguel Barbosa said.
"The important thing now is public safety,” he added, noting that the authorities would compensate those affected.
