Ex-Royal Navy submariner raped woman he met online and made her wear dog collar

A man has been jailed after subjecting a woman he met on "female-led" dating app Bumble to a vile and humiliating rape ordeal while he was already on bail for a separate allegation of sexual assault.

Former Royal Navy submariner Stuart Jennings, 37, began flirting with his victim on the dating site in 2020.

Eventually, she agreed to visit his home for sex, bringing "an overnight bag and 'slutty underwear".

But the court heard the sex rapidly became "rough and aggressive" – against the woman’s wishes – and Jennings choked the victim "until she couldn't breathe" while he told her to "Call me daddy".

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that Jennings persistently demanded his victim to agree to anal intercourse, despite her telling him that she was unwilling.

The court heard how Jennings "manipulated" his victim, telling her that he would inform the police that she had been drinking if she attempted to drive home.

He bullied her into wearing a dog collar and, when the woman asked him to remove it, claimed that he had lost the tool that undid its lock.

The woman felt trapped in Jennings's home and agreed to go to bed.

During the night, while the victim was in bed next to him, he raped her, and the next morning she agreed to have sex again because she saw it as "a way out".

Jennings continued to force himself on the woman while repeatedly demanding anal intercourse, but she continued to refuse.

Mr Hall told the court that when another woman had visited Jennings, he had pinned her down and slapped her face, pulled her hair and bit her.

He also demanded anal sex with her as "that's what a man does to control a woman".

Giles Nelson, defending, accepted that Jennings had "behaved very badly" and that his actions were "extremely distressing" for both of the women.

But, he said, his client was an "intelligent and promising individual" who had been of previous good character.

He explained that Jennings had been forced out of the Royal Navy after eight years of service after being diagnosed with the chronic bowel complaint Crohn’s disease.

Jennings, of Belmont, Hereford, admitted rape, assault by penetration and sexual assault

Judge Martin Jackson sentenced Jennings to six years and 10 months imprisonment.

The judge also imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order that bans Jennings from signing up to any dating websites or apps and puts other limits on his access to the internet.
