Horrified nurses realise surgeon amputated wrong leg of elderly patient
An Austrian hospital has admitted to amputating the wrong leg of an elderly patient during a routine procedure.
The 82-year-old man required surgery to remove his left leg due to previous illnesses, but surgeons at The Freistadt Clinic, Northern Austria, marked up the wrong limb before heading into the operating theatre.
It wasn't until two days later, during a routine bandage change when horrified nurses realised the surgeon's horrific blunder.
The clinic, which is based in a small town of the same name near the Czech border, said it was 'deeply shocked' and described the incident as a 'tragic mistake'.
In a statement released today, the clinic said: 'We are deeply shocked that on Tuesday, despite quality assurance standards, the wrong leg of an 82-year old man… was amputated'.
"Unfortunately the mistake, in which the right leg was removed instead of the left, occurred as a result of a sequence of unfortunate circumstances."
The pensioner has been offered psychological help and must still undergo another operation to remove his left leg from mid-thigh.

It is unconfirmed how the mistake happened but they have announced that they have scheduled another operation to remove the other leg 'shortly.'
The clinic claims a full investigation, as well as a standards review, has been promised by the clinic in the wake of the news.

In 2018, a surgeon was jailed for amputating the healthy leg of an 87-year-old woman in Azerbaijan.
Valekh Kerimov claimed he amputated the patient's healthy right leg instead because the operating table was "the wrong way round."
Victim Tarlan Mamedova, who suffered from gangrene, then faced a second trip to the operating room to remove the diseased leg.
