Meghan Markle ‘paid tribute to mum Doria Ragland’ by naming daughter Lilibet
Meghan Markle paid tribute to her mum Doria Ragland and her aunt by naming her daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, royal commentators have suggested.
The Sussexes have sparked controversy by using the Queen's intimate nickname, Lilibet, for their daughter with the likes of Princess Diana's former butler calling it "very inappropriate".
But it has been claimed the name also has a special meaning for Meghan's side of the family.
Speaking on Us Weekly's Royally Us podcast, Molly Mulshine explained: “Lilly is a flower and Meghan’s mum used to call her flower and Meghan also has an aunt named Lilly who was really important in her life.”
In fact, it was Meghan's great-great aunt, Lillie Evans, who shared her newborn's name. She died when the Duchess was 22 but left her home to Doria.
The Suits actress revealed her mum's nickname for her in her now-defunct The Tig blog.
She shared her nicknames, writing: "Meg, MM, M&M, and Flower (which my mom has called me since I was little)."
Co-host Joe Drake also pointed out claims that Harry hinted he liked the name as far back as 2019.
Joe said: “Prince Harry hinted at liking the name Lili because back in 2019 they were visiting some schoolchildren in Birkenhead and Harry was talking to a mother who had a daughter named Lili.

“He was interacting with them even asking how the little girl spells her name so I think he was already leaving a little Easter egg hint that it was a name he was in to.”
Molly added: “There are so many different things that make the name so perfect for them and it just works on a lot of different levels and it is really cool to see that Harry has actually been on the record as saying that he likes this name before.”
Joe said that it was a case of “digging a little bit deeper” to see the importance of the name.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's unusual baby name – and what it's like to share it
“Obviously when everybody heard the name they thought Lilbet Diana is strictly a nod to the Royal Family and people were remiss to find out that Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mum as you mentioned, was also given a nod,” he continued.
“We just had to dig a little bit deeper into those stories to find why. Because I think it is important too to acknowledge Meghan’s family even if she has had issues with her half-siblings and her father I think it is nice to acknowledge Doria.”
Molly added that it shouldn’t be forgotten in all the furore that it is actually a “cute” name.
“If you take away all the politically charged meaning behind the name, it is just a really cute name for a little girl,” she said.
“Aesthetically it is just an adorable name but the thing is you can’t really take away all of the past that is going on around the family right now and that makes it a really interesting choice I think.”
