UK sets new record for daily Covid cases as infections hit 62k for first time

The UK has broken yet another grim record for daily numbers of Covid-19 cases.

The nation recorded 62,322 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday and 1,041 deaths within 28 days of a positive test for the virus, according to official data.

Tuesday's data had shown 60,916 new coronavirus infections and 830 deaths.

The latest R number (the average number of secondary infections produced by one infected person) is estimated at 1.1 to 1.3 with a daily infection growth rate range of +1% to +6% as of 23 December 2020.
