Burglars have stolen a replica skull on display in a York pub of a woman who was executed at the turn of the 19th century.

Elizabeth Jones received a death sentence in 1800 for using a counterfeit bank note.

Over 200 years later, in an act of brazen "skullduggery", a model of her skull was stolen from its display in the The Golden Fleece pub in Pavement between January 2 and 3.

The pub’s management have now issued an urgent appeal to be reunited with the stolen ornament, Yorkshire Live reports.

In a message on Facebook, they said: "Unfortunately over the course of last night/today someone has taken it upon themselves to remove Elizabeth from her resting place.

"This is beyond us why anyone would want to take her and we sincerely hope the culprit had a lapse of judgement and will return her to us as soon as possible."

They added: "We are currently looking through all our CCTV in order to hand it to over. Please contact us if you have any information on her whereabouts to bring her back to her rightful home."

Elizabeth was executed for passing a forged £1 note and two forged half-guineas on Knavesmire on August 23 in 1800.

According to The Golden Fleece, she was believed to have frequented the establishment when it was an Inn and the replica was commissioned and donated to the owner at the time.

The Golden Fleece is far from the only historical pub that claims to be haunted.

Ye Olde Salutation Inn, one of Nottingham's oldest pubs, was built over a network of caves dating back to the 9th century.

Local legend has it that the establishment is stalked by the spirit of a little girl who died in the courtyard centuries ago, with multiple customers complaining that they sustained mysterious scratches.

The spooky scratching reportedly stopped after the landlord took a doll down to the cave below and left it there for the girl's ghost.
