What is Joe Biden's American Rescue Plan?
PRESIDENT Joe Biden has unveiled his American Rescue Plan, a program that will fund families and communities who are struggling with the Covid-19 crisis.
Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with labor leaders on Wednesday, February 17 at 3:30pm, to discuss the American Rescue Plan.
What is Biden's American Rescue Plan?
Biden's emergency legislative package will fund vaccinations, provide immediate and direct relief to families suffering from the Covid-19 crisis, and support struggling communities.
The president's plan will mount a national vaccination program, contain Covid-19 and safely reopen schools.
The program will set up community vaccination sites nationwide, scale up testing and tracing, and providing paid sick leave to contain spread of the virus among other issues.
The legislation will also tackle the necessary investments to meet Biden's goal of safely reopening a majority of the K-8 schools during his first 100 days in office.
By expanded testing it will ensure that schools can implement regular testing to support safe reopening's.
Are stimulus checks also included in the legislation?
Biden's plan will deliver immediate economic relief to working families who are financial struggling with the Covid-19 crisis.
Under the latest proposal, individuals earning below $75,000 would receive the full $1,400 stimulus check, and couples earning below $150,000 would be entitled to receive $2,800.
The plan will also extend unemployment benefits and give families with kids and childless workers an emergency boost this year.
In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, February 16, Biden defended his proposed spending bill and the next round of $1,400 stimulus checks – saying "now is the time to go big".
"I’m committed to pass – look, here’s – some of you are probably economists or college professors or you’re teaching in school.
“There is consensus among economists, left, right and center, that overwhelming consensus is in order to grow the economy, we cant spent too much," Biden said.
He added, "Now is the time we should be spending. Now is the time to go big."
Will Biden's legislation address the Covid-19 strains?
The president's proposal includes funding to dramatically increase the nations sequencing, surveillance and outbreak analytics capacity at the levels demanded by the crisis.
With the new Covid strains in the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa posing a potential threat to millions of Americans, Biden's plan will tackle the virus as it continues to change and move through the population.
